I attended my first Bikram yoga class in the winter of 2001 in Tulsa, OK where I was living at the time. I was dancing with an arts education group and had been very interested in starting yoga for a couple of years. I was very intimidated to start, but when I finally went, my first class was fantastic! I loved the challenge, the discipline and intensity of it. It took me a while to really get a steady practice going. At first I went a few times a month, then once a week then twice. I later realized that, by taking more classes each week, it was getting easier and I was feeling better and better. Yoga is not a side hobby, but a lifestyle. Once I realized how strong and how great I felt doing at least 3 classes a week, I was hooked. Not even a year in to my practice I was off to teacher training and even though I didn't know that much about the yoga yet. I knew I loved it and had faith in it and was ready for the new challenge, so, off to Los Angeles I went, for one of the most intense and grueling experiences of my life.
Teacher training was life changing for me in many ways. Most importantly, it taught me that I was stronger mentally, emotionally, and physically than I knew. I was stretched to my limits in every way but by the time graduation rolled around I felt literally there was nothing in life I could not do. That is what Bikram Yoga can teach ANYONE. Bikram says we always underestimate the strength and power that lies within us. I was more proud of graduating from teacher training then I was from my University. Teaching was a great fit for me from the start and I have loved my continual growth in my practice and in my knowledge of the yoga. For me the yoga is the best way to maintain my health, energy, weight, and balance my crazy hormones. I have at times suffered from extreme anxiety and some dark days of depression and now I know how to manage that through the yoga. Whenever I feel depression or anxiety start to come on, I know to go straight to the yoga room and it eases or goes away.
I have moved around a lot since my days of teaching Bikram in Tulsa and have since then enjoyed teaching for studios in Portland, OR, San Diego, CA La Canada, CA, Pasadena, CA and now in Redondo Beach, CA. I believe this yoga is for everyone and is a powerful path to health and a long, happy, full of peace life.
